Emergency Planning & Contingency Planning for Your Cat From Your Las Vegas, NV Veterinarian

Have you considered what would happen to your pets if you had a medical emergency and couldn’t return to your house to care for your pets? If you get unexpectedly hospitalized or if you suddenly pass away without warning, what would happen to your pets? If you live alone, how would the emergency crew even know that there are pets at home that need care? Who would be available and have the key and or alarm codes to get access to your house?

At All About Cats Cat Veterinary Hospital, we want to make sure that all of our pet parents have made plans about what will happen to their cat in any type of emergency. Now is the time to start thinking about those plans, while you're still healthy and able to find alternate care options for a wide range of situations.

Emergency Planning for Your Pet

You plan for emergencies in many other parts of your life. Why not make emergency plans to ensure your furry family members are cared for in case you can't do it? A few simple actions can give you peace of mind, knowing a tragedy won't happen to your pet if you're not there to care for him.

  • Choose at least two different friends or relatives to act as emergency caregivers, both for temporary and permanent situations. Give them keys to your house and information on all of your cat's feeding and medication schedules
  • Let your neighbors and friends know about your emergency caregivers and give out their phone numbers to everyone you know
  • Carry a card in your wallet alerting first responders to your cats at home alone as well as your caregivers' contact information
  • Place stickers on windows and doors for firefighters and police, letting them know you have cats in the house that should be rescued
  • Tape the name and contact number of all your emergency caregivers to the inside of both your front and back doors
