Disaster Preparedness For Your Cat

Your disaster preparedness plan should include all members of the family, including your four-legged members. To ensure your pet is ready, the veterinarians at All About Cats Veterinary Hospital have some disaster preparedness tips.

Shelter in Place Plans

Make sure you have at least a week’s worth of food, water, and litter on hand at all times. Since storms can be frightening for cats, you should consider how you will comfort your feline. Some calming spray along with a favorite blanket can help your pet feel safe and secure in even the most difficult of circumstances.

Acclimating to a Cat Carrier

Long before it’s time to evacuate, you should get your cat used to the idea of riding in a cat carrier. Start by putting your pet’s food and water inside the carrier and gradually increase the amount of time your pet spends inside it. Once your feline is comfortable going in to the carrier, put it in the car and drive around for a bit. Not only will this make an evacuation go smoother, but it will ensure that future trips to our veterinarians are less stressful.

Evacuating Your Cat

Pack an emergency bag for your cat that includes all of the essentials. In addition to food, water, and litter, you should also bring:

  • Collar with ID tags
  • Printed pictures of your pets
  • Cat carrier with bedding inside
  • Medications
  • Medical records from your cat’s veterinarian
  • Toys
  • Treats

It’s always a good idea to plan where you might go ahead of time. Make a list of pet-friendly hotels in your area so you will not have to scramble to find lodging.
