Smoke Can Cause Problems For Your Cat

CAT HOSPITAL IN LAS LEGAS DISCUSSES SMOKING AROUND CATS

At All About Cats Veterinary Hospital, we want to keep you informed about how to keep your home safe for your cat. That's why our cat veterinarian points out that smoking endangers felines. Here’s why.

Studies show that cats exposed to smoke from tobacco products are at higher risk of getting cancer. Smoking releases substances into the air that affect pets and people in the home. In addition to this secondhand smoke, thirdhand smoke (the particles that get on furniture, clothes, carpets and more) is dangerous too.

CAT VETERINARIAN EXPLAINS WHY SMOKE ENDANGERS CATS

Maybe you want to ask a cat veterinarian at our cat hospital in Las Vegas, “Why are cats vulnerable to illness caused by smoke? Well, cats groom themselves by licking, and thirdhand smoke get in cat's fur, but it also gets in hair and clothes. And you have a lot a contact with your faithful companion.

CANCER IN CATS

One study found that a cat living with a smoker for five or more years had a higher risk of cancer than felines living in a smoke-free home. Felines in homes where people smoke more than one pack of cigarettes daily are three times more likely to develop lymphoma than cats who do not live with smokers. A cat veterinarian reported that a study found that cats that live in a smoker’s home are two to three times more likely to get mouth cancer than ones living in a smoke-free environment.

SMOKERS CAN PROTECT CATS

Obviously, smoking is bad for cats, but if you cannot stop smoking, help your cat in other ways. Designate a smoking area at home that’s physically separated from your four-legged companion. Be sure to keep cigarettes, cigarette buts and other tobacco products out of reach.

If you are concerned about your cat’s health, schedule an examination at All About Cats Veterinary Hospital. We're the cat hospital in Las Vegas that's ready to serve you and your cat.
