Our Recommendations for Newly Adopted Cats

Top Tips On Newly Adopted Cats

A cat makes a wonderful addition to the family. A cat isn’t as dependent on you as a dog, so if you're not around as often or don't have the time to exercise a dog, a cat is a great option for a pet. If you're new to the world of cat adoption, you might not know what to do when you bring your new furry friend home. At All About Cats Veterinary Hospital, we want to give you a leg up on cat care, so here are our top tips on newly adopted cats.

Before Adopting

Eventually, you may want to open your home up to the cat, but it's good to start with a single room. Make this the cat safe room where there are places for your cat to hide and feel comfortable. If you have other pets, this is a way to keep the cat separated from dogs or other large animals. Make sure there is food and water in the room. A litter box should be available, but keep it far away from the food and water. The litter box should be placed in an area that can be disinfected if you plan to eventually relocate it later. You should also give your cat a post for scratching.

Bringing Your Cat Home

Spend time around your cat. Help her feel comfortable with you. It is going to take your cat some time to get used to you. This doesn't mean picking your cat up all of the time and stressing her out. Instead, just spend time in the room. Sit on the floor with your cat and let her rub up against you. Slowly but surely your cat will open up to you. Try interacting with feather toys or balls at first.

Veterinary Check-Up

It's always important to have your new pet checked out when you first adopt an animal. You'll want a clean bill of health for your pet and your vet will give you some veterinary care options to consider. At our cat hospital in Las Vegas, we'd love to provide you with our veterinary care services.
