Cat Safety During the Holidays

Cat Safety During the Holidays

The holidays should be a time of joy, but for a cat all the activity and new people and things coming into the house can be frightening. At All About Cats we want you and your special purrson to enjoy a healthy, happy life all year round. Use these helpful tips to avoid holiday hazards and keep the season merry.

  • Keep toxic plants away. Mistletoe, poinsettia, holly and some types of lilies can be poisonous to your cat. If swallowed, pine needles can block the digestive track. Use silk flowers and watch your cat carefully around live plants.

  • Many holiday decorations look similar to cat toys, but pouncing or chewing on ornaments and garlands can cause a variety of injuries. Ribbons and tinsel are especially hazardous if swallowed. Keep tempting ornaments out of your cat’s reach.

  • Lights make your holiday décor twinkle, but electrical cords can be a fatal hazard for curious kittens. Bundle cords inside a cardboard tube or tape them to the wall/floor to help prevent cats from chewing on or playing with them.

  • Provide an extra special, quiet place for kitty to retreat when the house is full of strangers.

  • Don’t feed your cat table scraps. Many common holiday foods can be toxic to felines and others are loaded with fat and salt which can upset your cat’s digestive system. Alcohol, onions, fruit seeds and pits, onions and chocolate are especially dangerous for pets. If you want to share special treats, stick with fresh foods such as carrot sticks, fresh cranberries, raw green beans or small tidbits of cooked white turkey meat.

  • Make plans in advance. Whether you’re traveling with your cat, boarding it, or hiring a sitter while you travel, don’t wait until the last minute to get organized. Confirm airline regulations regarding pet travel—different companies have different rules. Make reservations at pet-friendly hotels in advance. Remember, traveling with a cat means taking more frequent breaks and providing safe restraints in the car. Make certain your cat is tagged and microchipped to ensure its safe return just in case you get separated.
