Life Stages of Felines

Life Stages of Felines: How to Be Healthy At Every Stage

Black and white kittens in Las Vegas, NV

Cats need different types of care at each stage of life. We've listed the various stages of life below:

  1. Kitten: Birth to 6 months. At this stage, your kitten will need a variety of preventative services, including vaccinations, boosters and wellness exams. Spaying or neutering your cat can help improve his or her quality of life in later years.
  2. Young Adult Cat: 7 months to two years. At this age, your cat will still need booster shots and wellness exams to catch medical problems in their early stages. If your cat spends a lot of time outside, it's important to ensure your pet gets vaccinations regularly especially for Feline Leukemia Virus.
  3. Early Middle Aged Cat: three years to six years. Many early middle aged cats need to be seen by the vet one time per year for a complete exam. We'll monitor your pet's weight and probably recommend your cat's first dental cleaning, to help your cat's teeth stay healthy.
  4. Late Middle Aged Cat: seven years to ten years. Many cats at this stage start to put on more weight and develop health problems. Bringing your cat to the vet on an annual basis is critical for preventing life-threatening diseases and medical conditions. This age group benefits from annual testing to screen for diseases that affect older cats.
  5. Senior Adult Cat: eleven years to fourteen years. At this age, cats often have health problems, whether that's arthritis, kidney issues, thyroid disease or another condition that requires regular care. We recommend that you bring your cat in twice per year when he or she reaches this age. Annual testing becomes critical in these later years to monitor health and keep an eye on internal organ function.
  6. Geriatric Cat: fifteen years and on. Geriatric adult cats need extra help to stay healthy and comfortable. Bring in your cat twice per year for annual geriatric wellness exams and screening tests. We can support your geriatric cat’s wellness through his “golden years.”
