Top 3 Common Reasons For Cat Vomiting

As a cat owner, you know that cats can occasionally vomit. But why? In addition, how much vomiting is too much? And how do you know when it is a single, isolated incident vs. when you should call the vet? Keep reading to learn the top three most common reasons that cats vomit, as well as what you can do about it.

Why Do Cats Vomit?

Cats vomit for a variety of reasons. Here are the top three:

  1. Hairballs - Most cats expel a hairball about once a week or once every two weeks. A hairball is simply a damp wad of undigested hair that your cat regularly regurgitates. The vast majority of cats vomit because of a hairball. If your cat expels a hairball once every week or two, it is nothing to be worried about. But if it is more often than that, call your vet.

  2. Ingestion of a foreign substance - When your cat eats something he shouldn't, chances are that he'll vomit. This could be anything from poisonous plants to human medications to pieces of string or yarn. If you notice your cat throwing up a foreign object, call your vet right away.

  3. More serious conditions - This can include internal parasites, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, liver failure or hyperthyroidism. In the case of these conditions, your cat will likely vomit a few times a week. If this occurs, it is important to come into your vet's office right away to have your cat evaluated.
