Preventative Health Care for Cats
Your feline companion is a true friend, snuggling up with you, entertaining you and the family, and providing endless sources of love. That’s why you want to be sure your cat—no matter their age—is in the best health possible.
To do so, it’s best to bring your pet in to see their vet for a physical exam at least every year. This form of preventative health care can detect health issues sooner so your cat can enjoy every day of their lives with you.
Tests Done During a Physical Exam
Your veterinarian will test your cat to get an overall picture of their wellness. This means a comprehensive physical exam that includes:
Urogenital testing, looking for problems with urination, mammary gland issues, and abnormal discharge
Skin and coat testing, looking for anal sac difficulties, reduction in hair or hair quality, matted fur, raw irritated areas, lumps, and differences in skin color
Review of the paws, looking for overgrown toenails that may impede walking, leg weakness, and limping
Behavioral review, testing for increased aggression
Breathing tests, looking for excess nasal discharge, sneezing more often, breathing troubles, and excessive coughing
Intestinal testing, including the stomach, where the vet reviews stool quality, whether the cat belches and has gas, if the cat is constipated or has diarrhea, and if they vomit often
Eye and ear testing, reviewing for itchy spots and any swelling and redness in and around the eyes and ears
Dental testing, where the vet looks for broken or damaged teeth and indicators of oral pain
Shots Required During the Exam
Equally as important as those tests are the shots your cat will receive during their physical exam. Do keep in mind that depending on the age of your cat, they may need these shots more or less often.
The most common shots are those that safeguard cats against hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, and other internal parasites. Your cat will also receive shots to prevent the development of rabies, feline calici virus, feline viral rhinotracheitis, and feline panleukopenia, also known as distemper.
