Microchipping Your Cat Is A Great Gift!

Why a Microchip is a Perfect Gift for Your Cat!

Are you absolutely sure your pet will never get lost? So many of us assume our pets will always be safe, but it’s heartbreaking to read the classified ads and see so many lost pets every day! Some circumstances are out of our control, accidents happen and it may happen to you! Are you prepared? In Las Vegas, All About Cats Veterinary Hospital can microchip your pet and improve the odds that your beloved cat will make it back home if it’s ever lost.

What is a Microchip?

About the size of a grain of rice, microchips are encoded with a unique number and inserted, usually between the shoulder blades, by a veterinarian using a special syringe/needle combination. The unique code number is then registered to the owner. If your cat ends up at an animal shelter or a veterinary hospital, he or she will be scanned for a microchip in an effort to locate the cat’s owner. If a microchip is found, they will contact you. After insertion, your only ongoing task is to update your contact information if it changes.

Is Microchipping safe?

Millions of pets have been microchipped, and the only major issue has been that chips sometimes “migrate,” not staying where they’re implanted making them difficult to find with the microchip scanner. While it’s difficult to locate a chip that has migrated in a large dog, it’s seldom a problem to scan the whole cat and find a chip. Migrated chips generally stay just under the skin and don’t cause any health concerns. Other health problems from microchips are extremely rare.

Being an Indoor Cat is no Guarantee!

Cats get lost. Outdoor cats certainly get lost more often than those living exclusively indoors, but life happens. People move, and while furniture and belongings are being packed, cats sometimes panic and flee the scene. Some indoor cats spend their whole life plotting how to get out where those birds are - the fascinating ones they see out the window - and when the opportunity arises, they dart out, become “great hunters,” end up disoriented, and become an ad in the “Lost” section of the classifieds. Some indoor/outdoor cats are content to stay in fenced and gated yards, but others love to roam, and often get lost or disappear.
