Information About Cat Kidney Disease from Our Las Vegas Veterinarian

Unfortunately, kidney disease is a common problem in cats, especially older cats. Cat kidney disease is one of the leading causes of death in older cats. One of the most important things you can do as a cat owner is to recognize the signs and symptoms of kidney disease in your cat. Early detection is key and allows you to take the steps necessary to slow the progression of the disease and ultimately prolong your cat’s life. Here are the signs and symptoms you should be aware of as well as the treatment options available at our Las Vegas cat hospital.

Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Disease

The kidneys are responsible for filtering the waste products that are produced by your cat’s body. If cats are suffering from kidney disease the filtration system of the kidneys begins to shut down causing the waste product accumulates in the blood stream. These waste products cause cats to feel sick, causing loss of appetite, nausea and eventual secondary weight loss. The kidneys are also responsible for maintaining fluid balance and keeping track of hydration. Poor kidney function causes dehydration which causes cats to drink excessively, feel tired, and even get constipated. There are several different causes for cat kidney disease and the disease may be chronic or acute. Signs and symptoms of kidney disease in cats often include:

  • Increase in thirst
  • Increased urine production
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Lack of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • In late stages, you may be able to smell an abnormal odor in the cat’s breath and you may notice ulcers on the tongue and gums

Treating Kidney Disease in Cats

The treatment will depend on the physical condition of your cat and the cause of the kidney disease. Treatment may include:

  • Fluid therapy to prevent dehydration
  • Various medications, such as those used to treat nausea, to regulate blood electrolyte levels and possible pain medications
  • A change in diet
  • Possible hospitalization and intravenous fluid therapy to replenish hydration may be necessary, depending on the severity of the disease
