A cat veterinary clinic offers some very special advantages to feline patients and their owners, and All About Cats Veterinary Hospital is no exception. If you've never made use of this type of clinic, however, it's understandable that you may have many questions. Here are our answers to some of the most frequently asked ones:
It’s not that we don't like dogs, it’s just that we really we love cats! Unfortunately, cats are often misunderstood and get a bad rap. That won’t happen at All About Cats. Our exclusive focus on cats ensures that we can apply an unusual depth of experience and skill when caring for felines like yours. Our special interest in cats motivates us to make them as comfortable as we can when they visit the vet. Cats are highly sensitive to their surroundings, so we try to create a "cat-friendly zone" free of barking dogs, and unfamiliar animal smells.
It is a common misbelief that your cat is going outside of its litter box intentionally to get back at you. Usually, the main culprit is your cat is unhappy with the litter box and seeks out an alternative location to do its business or he/she is having a medical problem that is causing pain or distress while in the litter box. It’s important to learn more about litter box preferences and the different medical problems that can affect your cat.
Cats ingest a certain amount of hair because they use their tongues to groom themselves. This results in them vomiting up hairballs, a normal and harmless situation. If your cat seems to vomit excessive amounts of hair, a veterinary consult can help. Also if your cat vomits routinely and there usually isn't a lot of hair, it could be a medical condition that requires vet advice. Diisorders like intestinal parasites, food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease are just a few examples of things we deal with every day at All About Cats. If your cat has sudden acute fits of vomiting, this can be an indication of intestinal obstruction, poisoning, or some other serious condition requiring emergency care.
Well the obvious answer is cat food.....but which one? We generally recommend cat food brands using a scientific approach to create diets for the specific nutritional needs of cats. Several brands have been around a long time and have been the ground breakers for animal nutritional research and pet food development. The two that are most trusted and recommended by the doctors at All About Cats are Hills Science Diet and Royal Canin. Visit our Pet Food Information Links for more details about pet food choices. Every cat has different tastes, lifestyle, and health issues. Any major feeding changes should be supervised by your veterinary team. Cats can become seriously ill if food changes are forced upon them and they go on a food strike for even a couple of days.
Nevada law requires cats to be regularly vaccinated against the Rabies virus. Nevada is not a Rabies-free area and Rabies is commonly found in bats in Las Vegas! To prevent the spread of Rabies and to protect your cat specifically, Rabies vaccines are required, unless your cat's health prevents him or her from getting the vaccine. Other advised vaccines protect against Feline Herpes Virus, Feline Calici Virus and the Panleukopenia virus. These core vaccinations provide potentially lifesaving protection, so schedule these shots when your kitten is eight weeks old. It is also important to schedule booster shots to prevent the protection from fading.
Keep the carrier in the house and make it a part of your cats everyday life. Try putting her favorite toys or treats in the carrier. Cats love enclosed spaces anyway, so this extra incentive may be all she needs to regard the carrier as her "house." Visit our page about cat carriers for more advice.
We generally ask owners to schedule an appointment so we can serve all of our patients in a calm, well-organized atmosphere. While emergencies obviously do not require an appointment, we do ask that you call us to let us know that you are on your way.
