Protect Your Cat from Toxins and Dangers This Holiday
Posted on 2011-11-18 14:40:20
At All About Cats Veterinary Hospital, we focus our care on cats only. Our veterinarians want you and your cat to enjoy the holidays and offer some tips to keep your cat healthy and well this holiday season. One way to protect your cat is to keep her away from toxins and other dangers that appear during the holidays. Foods, plants and decorations that are perfectly healthy for humans and some other pets can be deadly for cats, especially if your cat ingests them.
Mistletoe, Pine Leaves and Lilies
Be very careful if you hang mistletoe in your house during the holidays. The berries and leaves from the mistletoe are very poisonous to cats. If you have a kitten or cat, it's best to get an artificial mistletoe bunch.
While the needles from a pine tree aren't toxic, they are sharp enough to puncture your cat's stomach if swallowed. Holly leaves and berries are poisonous and can scratch up your cat's mouth if she chews on them as well.
Lilies and amaryllis are other holiday plants that are toxic to cats. Head to our veterinary hospital for evaluation right away if you catch your cat chewing on any holiday plants. If you ever have questions about whether a plant or flower is toxic, please call our cat clinic for more information.
If you have a live Christmas tree, the water under the tree poses a danger to your cat, especially if she gets thirsty and drinks from the bowl. Bacteria can grow in the water, especially if you put sugar in it, which will make your cat ill. The tree itself may be coated in chemicals which leach into the water and sicken your cat.
Tree trimmings and gift wrapping items, such as tinsel and curling ribbon, are often extremely enticing to cats. We recommend keeping these items in a room that your cat does not have access too. If tinsel or ribbon is ingested by your cat, it can cause obstructions in the intestines which may lead to intestinal surgery.

How to Tell When Your Cat is Sick
Posted on 2011-10-20 07:10:03
Signs That Your Cat is Sick
Cats are notorious for being playful when they are in a good mood and free from illness. It may seem easy to deduce that if a cat is up to his usual antics then he's doing fine and enjoying life. But, the caveat is that cats are very good at being sneaky when it comes to hiding if they are not feeling well. This trait in cats is an instinctual method of survival in the wild. Cats know that if they show weakness then the animals that prey on them have a better chance at succeeding at having a big meal for dinner.
Therefore, it is up to the pet owner to know the signs and recognize when his or her cat is showing signs that they are ill and in need of a visit to our veterinary hospital.
Veterinarians at the All About Cats Veterinary Hospital
are Experienced in Treating Cat Illnesses
Early detection is key to helping veterinarians quickly bring a cat back to health. To that effect, symptoms signaling a cat may be in need of a trip to a cat hospital include the following: changes in eating and drinking habits; a negative reaction when the cat is picked up or touched; a variation in the appearance of the cat or its ability to move; vomiting, diarrhea or an increase or decrease of urine output; or the cat preferring to find a dark and quiet hiding place to avoid movement and save energy.
This is not a comprehensive list, so if you have questions about changes in your cat’s behavior, please contact us at All About Cats Veterinary Hospital right away.
Our cat clinic in Las Vegas treats felines exclusively and does not allow dogs on the premises, thereby helping to alleviate any additional stress your cat may feel. All About Cats Veterinary Hospital was founded by Dr. Terri Koppe when she identified that there was a need for a cat hospital of this kind so cats could feel comfortable while being helped by our cat veterinarians.

Cat Grooming at Our Las Vegas Cats Only Clinic
Posted on 2011-10-04 11:18:14
Our All About Cats Veterinary Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada is a dedicated "cats only" clinic. Because we cater to cat owners and their cats, we offer high quality services that range from standard treatments to boarding and cat grooming.
Our Veterinarians at Our Cat Hospital
Our all-female team of experienced veterinarians provide professional care for cats in the Las Vegas area. Our team includes Drs. Terri Koppe, Cathy Berquist, Alissa McCormick and Beatrix Jenai. They share a passion for cats and the needs of cat owners or, should we say, the humans owned by their cats! In addition to providing regular check-ups and treatments for common ailments, our team of qualified doctors also tends to practical and aesthetic feline needs through grooming.
Cat Grooming Services
At our cat hospital, we offer home grooming tips and provide professional grooming services for your furry felines.
Most cats are compulsive groomers on their own, but cat owners can still assist their feline friends. Regular brushing helps prevent fur from becoming matted, which is especially important for cats with longer hair.
While cats typically do not require bathing, you can give your cat a bath, if necessary. Provide your cat with a wooden or wire platform in the tub for stability; only use shampoo made for cats. Make every effort to keep shampoo and water out of your cat's ears by using cotton balls. Likewise, protect your cat's eyes from shampoo irritation by using an ophthalmic ointment. Completely towel dry your cat afterward and comb out any mats.
If you are interested in our professional grooming services, we are happy to oblige. Cat breeds with long hair, in particular, benefit from regular professional grooming for its health benefits, while cat owners appreciate its aesthetic appeal. We can trim out mats, shave cat bellies for comfort and even do a "sanitary shave" in the area under your cat's tail. Some cat owners like the lion shave for their long-haired cats, which we perform while your cat is under anesthesia.
If you have questions or would like to make a grooming appointment, call our Las Vegas cat clinic today at 702-257-3222. We look forward to serving you and your feline companion.
When was the last time you groomed your cat? What do you think of professional grooming styles, such as the lion shave?
What is in Your Home May Be Toxic to Your Cat
Posted on 2011-09-12 18:45:05
It is not just the extreme heat of a Las Vegas summer that can be dangerous to a cat, but it is also the flowers and plants that are in or around a cat’s home. Most cats avoid ingesting dangerous plants, but sometimes a cat will eat something that can make them ill. It takes a veterinarian in Las Vegas to truly understand the medical issues a cat in this area might face.Signs Your Cat May Have Eaten Something Toxic
Of course the best way to prevent accidental ingestion of toxic plants by your cat is to not keep them around. You could also consider keeping the plants out of reach, or fencing them off from your cat.
Do you have any other suggestions on how to keep cats away from potentially dangerous plants or flowers?
