Protect Your Cat from Toxins and Dangers This Holiday

Posted on 2011-11-18 14:40:20

At All About Cats Veterinary Hospital, we focus our care on cats only. Our veterinarians want you and your cat to enjoy the holidays and offer some tips to keep your cat healthy and well this holiday season. One way to protect your cat is to keep her away from toxins and other dangers that appear during the holidays. Foods, plants and decorations that are perfectly healthy for humans and some other pets can be deadly for cats, especially if your cat ingests them.

Mistletoe, Pine Leaves and Lilies

Cat clinic in Las Vegas warns of holiday dangers for catsBe very careful if you hang mistletoe in your house during the holidays. The berries and leaves from the mistletoe are very poisonous to cats. If you have a kitten or cat, it's best to get an artificial mistletoe bunch.

While the needles from a pine tree aren't toxic, they are sharp enough to puncture your cat's stomach if swallowed. Holly leaves and berries are poisonous and can scratch up your cat's mouth if she chews on them as well.

Lilies and amaryllis are other holiday plants that are toxic to cats. Head to our veterinary hospital for evaluation right away if you catch your cat chewing on any holiday plants. If you ever have questions about whether a plant or flower is toxic, please call our cat clinic for more information.

If you have a live Christmas tree, the water under the tree poses a danger to your cat, especially if she gets thirsty and drinks from the bowl. Bacteria can grow in the water, especially if you put sugar in it, which will make your cat ill. The tree itself may be coated in chemicals which leach into the water and sicken your cat.

Tree trimmings and gift wrapping items, such as tinsel and curling ribbon, are often extremely enticing to cats. We recommend keeping these items in a room that your cat does not have access too. If tinsel or ribbon is ingested by your cat, it can cause obstructions in the intestines which may lead to intestinal surgery.

Las Vegas Cat Clinic Keeps Cats Away from Holiday Dangers

If you are foregoing the decorations this year and traveling out of town, or just looking to keep your cat safe for a night while you entertain, we offer cat boarding at our cat clinic in Las Vegas.  By boarding your cat with us, you know your cat has a safe and healthy place to stay during the holiday party or while you are out of town. At our hospital, your cat will have plenty of supervision and care from our veterinarians and lots of stimulation and activity during the day. Your cat will return after the holidays healthy and clean.

What steps do you take to ensure you and your cat enjoy a safe, happy holiday season?

How to Tell When Your Cat is Sick

Posted on 2011-10-20 07:10:03

Signs That Your Cat is Sick

Cats are notorious for being playful when they are in a good mood and free from illness. It may seem easy to deduce that if a cat is up to his usual antics then he's doing fine and enjoying life. But, the caveat is that cats are very good at being sneaky when it comes to hiding if they are not feeling well. This trait in cats is an instinctual method of survival in the wild. Cats know that if they show weakness then the animals that prey on them have a better chance at succeeding at having a big meal for dinner.

Therefore, it is up to the pet owner to know the signs and recognize when his or her cat is showing signs that they are ill and in need of a visit to our veterinary hospital.

are Experienced in Treating Cat IllnessesCat clinic in Las Vegas treats cats only

Early detection is key to helping veterinarians quickly bring a cat back to health. To that effect, symptoms signaling a cat may be in need of a trip to a cat hospital include the following: changes in eating and drinking habits; a negative reaction when the cat is picked up or touched; a variation in the appearance of the cat or its ability to move; vomiting, diarrhea or an increase or decrease of urine output; or the cat preferring to find a dark and quiet hiding place to avoid movement and save energy.

This is not a comprehensive list, so if you have questions about changes in your cat’s behavior, please contact us at All About Cats Veterinary Hospital right away.

Our cat clinic in Las Vegas treats felines exclusively and does not allow dogs on the premises, thereby helping to alleviate any additional stress your cat may feel. All About Cats Veterinary Hospital was founded by Dr. Terri Koppe when she identified that there was a need for a cat hospital of this kind so cats could feel comfortable while being helped by our cat veterinarians.

Has your cat been sick recently? What symptoms did you notice?

Cat Grooming at Our Las Vegas Cats Only Clinic

Posted on 2011-10-04 11:18:14

Our All About Cats Veterinary Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada is a dedicated "cats only" clinic. Because we cater to cat owners and their cats, we offer high quality services that range from standard treatments to boarding and cat grooming.

Our Veterinarians at Our Cat Hospital

Our all-female team of experienced veterinarians provide professional care for cats in the Las Vegas area. Our team includes Drs. Terri Koppe, Cathy Berquist, Alissa McCormick and Beatrix Jenai. They share a passion for cats and the needs of cat owners or, should we say, the humans owned by their cats! In addition to providing regular check-ups and treatments for common ailments, our team of qualified doctors also tends to practical and aesthetic feline needs through grooming.

Cat Grooming Services

At our cat hospital, we offer home grooming tips and provide professional grooming services for your furry felines.

Most cats are compulsive groomers on their own, but cat owners can still assist their feline friends.  Regular brushing helps prevent fur from becoming matted, which is especially important for cats with longer hair.

Las Vegas cat grooming at cat hospitalWhile cats typically do not require bathing, you can give your cat a bath, if necessary.  Provide your cat with a wooden or wire platform in the tub for stability; only use shampoo made for cats. Make every effort to keep shampoo and water out of your cat's ears by using cotton balls. Likewise, protect your cat's eyes from shampoo irritation by using an ophthalmic ointment. Completely towel dry your cat afterward and comb out any mats.

If you are interested in our professional grooming services, we are happy to oblige. Cat breeds with long hair, in particular, benefit from regular professional grooming for its health benefits, while cat owners appreciate its aesthetic appeal. We can trim out mats, shave cat bellies for comfort and even do a "sanitary shave" in the area under your cat's tail. Some cat owners like the lion shave for their long-haired cats, which we perform while your cat is under anesthesia.

If you have questions or would like to make a grooming appointment, call our Las Vegas cat clinic today at 702-257-3222. We look forward to serving you and your feline companion.

When was the last time you groomed your cat? What do you think of professional grooming styles, such as the lion shave?

What is in Your Home May Be Toxic to Your Cat

Posted on 2011-09-12 18:45:05

curious_cat_med.jpgIt is not just the extreme heat of a Las Vegas summer that can be dangerous to a cat, but it is also the flowers and plants that are in or around a cat’s home. Most cats avoid ingesting dangerous plants, but sometimes a cat will eat something that can make them ill. It takes a veterinarian in Las Vegas to truly understand the medical issues a cat in this area might face.
Some popular Las Vegas houseplants and garden plants include azaleas, sago palms, castor bean plants, oleander and lilies. In many cases it only takes a cat ingesting a tiny seed or two before they can become ill. If you suspect that your cat has eaten something that is making it ill, you should contact our cat hospital right away and one of our cat vets will advise you.

Signs Your Cat May Have Eaten Something Toxic

Cats can react differently depending on how much of a poisonous plant or flower they might have eaten. Symptoms can range from drooling, diarrhea, vomiting and excessive thirst. In severe cases your pet may have seizures, tremors or weakness.
Our cat vets will do everything they can to answer all your questions and give the very best care to your pet. If your cat is showing any unusual symptoms or behaving oddly, it is best to call our cat hospital and we can advise you on what the best course of action would be.
If you are going on holiday, consider our cat boarding facilities instead of leaving your cat at home alone where she might get into mischief. We will take excellent care of your pet while they are visiting with us.

Of course the best way to prevent accidental ingestion of toxic plants by your cat is to not keep them around. You could also consider keeping the plants out of reach, or fencing them off from your cat.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to keep cats away from potentially dangerous plants or flowers?

Want Peace of Mind? Get a Second Opinion

Posted on 2011-08-24 18:10:08

cat_care_med.jpgIt's a sad fact that not all veterinarians provide the same level of care. If you recently took your cat to a Las Vegas-area veterinarian and left with the nagging feeling that maybe there are other options for treatment, pay attention to that inner voice. While we do not doubt the credibility or training of other veterinarians, we treat only cats and are able to focus on cat-specific care and treatment. If you have any hesitation about your cat’s current level of care or want to see if there are other options, you should always get a second opinion. All About Cats stands ready to provide that second opinion, and much more.
We run a cat clinic, complete with cat grooming and cat boarding services, not a cat-and-dog or general veterinary clinic. That means we can focus all of our skills on the specific needs of one animal -- yours! Your cat will enjoy the peace and quiet of the dog-free environment at our veterinary hospital. More importantly, though, you will receive an expert second opinion that either confirms the previous one or suggests a different treatment.

Get Your Second Opinion for Free!

We decided to make it as easy as possible for cat owners to get that extra advice that could make the difference in kitty’s long-term health -- so we created a special standing offer. If you bring your cat to our Las Vegas cat hospital for an exam and consultation within three months of an exam by another animal clinic, we will perform that exam and consultation free of charge. (You must bring the receipt or record of the previous visit with you to get this special deal.) This service is normally a $44 value, but we would hate to see your cat not get the proper care just because you already spent money on an exam. In any case, we would like to meet both of you!

Are you ready to get that second opinion? If so, contact our veterinary hospital today and stop worrying. We look forward to putting your mind at rest while giving your special friend the best possible care and attention!

Have you received a second opinion that made a big difference in your cat’s care?
